First Aid Kit Inspection

First aid kits may seem insignificant – after all, they seem to be everywhere – however, it’s only when you have to use a first aid kit that you realise how important they are.

The benefits of having a proper and adequately stocked first aid kit, either in your home or your workplace, are many and it can potentially be lifesaving.

Here are 5 key reasons why you should have a first aid kit and make sure it contains all the necessary items to best deal with an accident.

  • Blood loss happens much faster than you think – while not every incident involves blood loss, if you do however have to treat a person suffering an incident involving blood loss, then how quickly you treat it might be able to slow down the loss.
  • It’s the law – while there are no laws around the need to have a first aid kit in a home, car, boat or caravan, there are laws around businesses needing to have one – located in an easily accessible area.
  • Peace of mind and an extra layer of protection - think of your first aid kit like your plan A. If an injury occurs, your first aid kit should be the first thing you reach for.
  • Every second counts – the faster you can respond to and begin treating an injury (even at the simplest level), the better the chances for the injured person for a healthy recovery.
  • Prevent future complications – while a cut finger may not be life threatening at the time, if left untreated or delayed treatment happens, then it may turn into a larger infected cut if not treated immediately

The First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice (2012) by Safe Work Australia is a great starting point to guide you in choosing first aid kits for your workplace.

Additionally, it is highly recommended that you participate in a first aid course so you will have the knowledge and skills to use equipment in a first aid kit to help someone who is suddenly injured or becomes ill.
